The Allegory of the Cave has long been considered one of Plato’s most significant teachings. Yet, its newer and far-timelier version has passed virtually unnoticed since it was first introduced in 1992 in the Walt Disney Pictures animated film Aladdin.
Aladdin’s story revolves around the grand prize found at the far end of the enchanted Cave of Wonders—a mysterious cavern with a storehouse of immeasurable wealth, inaccessible to all who are not pure enough to resist the enticements distracting them from the only true treasure the cave contains.
This ultimate treasure is a small, ordinary-looking brass lamp housing a wish-granting genie. It patiently awaits the arrival of its new owner on an elevated stone column at the cave’s far end. The path, wending its way to the deep recesses where the simple lamp can be found, is enveloped by worldly

Temptations luring the unaware.

To finally reach the lamp, the seeker must ignore the stacks of gold and silver, the piles of rubies, diamonds, emeralds, and the aristocracy’s beautifully crafted necklaces, crowns, and bracelets.
In this allegory, the lamp offers the gift of self-realization, while the physical treasures represent the myriad existential issues humanity is currently confronting. The forces controlling the matrix use these issues as bait to lure the ego, trapping enlightened beings into the illusion of selfless service.
For the purposes of this writing, let’s redefine ego as that small part of false self-awareness that is completely unaware of any existence outside the boundaries of its own limited perceptions.
The dilemma faced by every light worker on this planet is reminiscent of Hamlet’s soliloquy:
To be, or not to be: that is the question:

The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,

or succumb to the alluring temptations of the matrix?
